In the USA Sega is largely associated with SEGA Genesis. This fantastic video game console was a successor of Sega Master System 8-bit console. It was rather interesting that before Genesis or Mega Drive as it was called in Europe - Nintendo was dominating the USA market with NES 8-bit. In 1989 SEGA jumped in with the new 16-bit console that was way more advanced than the Nintendo NES and for 2 years it was going head to head with NES. I would say that Nintendo waited / prepared way to long before releasing SNES (Super NES) in 1991.
So nowadays when SEGA is no longer producing video game consoles we have Sega Genesis emulator for PC and many other platforms like Nintendo Wii SEGA emulator and Microsoft Xbox version. SEGA emulator games can be downloaded from internet or you can make your own backups for playing with Sega emulator.
Many analysts agree that SEGA lost the console race by trying to bring too many new innovative hardware products to the market at the same time so competing against itself, diluting the game list and generally confusing its fans. If you entered a store in 1994 you could find Sega Genesis + Sega 32X 32-bit add on for the Genesis + Mega-CD add-on + new SEGA Saturn on display all at the same time and each with its own games that were not compatible with the next console.
